President Hichilema Spearheads Agricultural Transformation in Zambia, Launches Early Maize Harvest

Tuesday marked a momentous occasion in Zambia's agricultural sector as President Hakainde Hichilema launched early maize harvesting in Mkushi District and flagged off the winter maize planting season.

The President commended farmers embracing year-round planting of maize, recognizing their important role in maintaining food security. An estimated 146,000 metric tons of maize are set to be harvested this season.

President Hichilema called on citizens to collaborate with the government in growing more food for consumption, while emphasizing the need for sustainable agricultural practices.

In line with the President's vision, the government aims to boost production to 10 million metric tons of maize annually by 2027, underlining its commitment to strengthening Zambia's food security.

The President emphasized the importance of early planting to meet consumer demands and address food scarcity resulting from severe drought. Recognizing the crucial role of water management in agricultural development, he reiterated the government's commitment to prioritizing water harvesting, dam construction, and investment in irrigation for sustainable food production and stable electricity supply.

In a bid to empower small and medium-scale farmers, the New Dawn Government is actively working to reduce irrigation, electricity, and tax costs. President Hichilema also urged larger farmers to share productivity techniques with their smaller counterparts, fostering a culture of knowledge-sharing and community upliftment.

He said the Government is implementing initiatives to support farmers affected by drought, indicating the Government's commitment towards mitigating agricultural challenges and safeguarding livelihoods.

This proactive approach signifies a new era in Zambia's agricultural landscape, with President Hichilema leading the charge towards sustainable growth and food security.
