A Transformational $600 Million Investment in Kitumba Mine

Zambia's journey to becoming a global mining hub is gaining momentum as President Hakainde Hichilema officiates the groundbreaking ceremony for a US$600 million copper investment at Sinomine's Kitumba Mine in Mumbwa District, Central Province.

President Hichilema emphasized that the Kitumba mining project is a game changer for both Mumbwa and the entire nation. Expected to produce 50,000 metric tonnes of copper annually and create 2,500 direct and indirect jobs, the investment reflects the government's commitment to Zambia's economic growth. It aligns with the presidential target of achieving 3 million metric tonnes of copper production by 2030.

The President also noted that this project would bring significant infrastructure development to Mumbwa, including roads, bridges, and telecommunications. Additionally, the construction of a 50-megawatt solar power plant will bolster the energy sector.

"I recall when the people of Mumbwa were ridiculed and called 'ba mumbwa mumbwa,' but this transformative investment will change Mumbwa's reputation, earning it respect and attracting further investment to benefit the people," President Hichilema said during the ceremony. He further highlighted the fruitful relationship between Zambia and China, stressing the importance of investments that benefit both nations.

Minister of Mines and Mineral Development, Paul Kabuswe, also spoke at the event, urging local communities to support such transformative investments. He encouraged them to seize the opportunities created, including jobs, skills development, farming activities, and education. The Minister emphasized that increased revenue through taxes would benefit the entire country, not just Mumbwa.

Honourable Kabuswe called on mine management, investors, and contractors to prioritize local hiring and training in relevant skills, ensuring that the local population is equipped to contribute to both community and national economic growth.

The Minister also emphasized that the UPND government is committed to avoiding delays in mining sector investments due to lengthy court battles. He advised investors to resolve disputes swiftly and encouraged citizens to refrain from illegal mining practices, urging them to follow proper and safe mining guidelines to prevent disasters.

"The new dawn government is here to deliver for its people! Just a few months ago, we awarded gold mining licenses to cooperatives in Mumbwa District. Last week, President Hichilema launched the countrywide high-resolution mineral mapping survey to ensure proper mine placement. Now, we are back in Mumbwa with a million-dollar investment that serves the best interests of the people," the Minister stated.

His Royal Highness Chief Kaindu of the Kaindu chiefdom in Mumbwa District expressed gratitude to the government for bringing development to his community. He underscored the government's commitment to inclusive economic growth and acknowledged the importance of traditional leaders in fostering unity and collaboration. Chief Kaindu assured the government of his chiefdom's full support for ongoing and future development activities.
